Ōtaki R.S.A. Executive 2012

A Note From The President
I am greatly honoured to have been elected President of the Otaki RSA and be part of the newly elected Executive Committee. This is a nicely balanced Committee with a range of talents that will be used to good effect to take us forward. We live in rapidly changing times and operate in a trading environment that is challenging. This applies not only to us but to all RSAs. The governing body has acknowledged this state of affairs for some time and that has lead to them developing a re-branding exercise designed to widen our appeal to a much larger section of New Zealand society. Otaki RSA will embrace the re-branding exercise in the months ahead.
We are the largest community group in town. We undertake many community activities – welfare social and sporting. We are also a business. We employ staff and in addition, have a large volunteer base. It is important that our business operates effectively and efficiently and that it also grows. Without profitability and growth we cannot do the things we need to do.
The new Executive Committee is fully aware of the immediate challenges it has. In a few days time it will have in place its budget for the remainder of the current financial year, as well as a short term business plan taking it through to 30 April next year. A longer term business plan will be developed over the weeks ahead.
Many of our members regularly participate in our clubroom activities and get great enjoyment. We would like to see more of our members more often in the clubrooms as this will give a much needed lift to our revenue. The restaurant is now operated by contractors who provide excellent meals at reasonable prices. The snooker and darts adjuncts are in great heart but can always fit in more participants. We have a membership draw on Tuesday and Friday nights. We have regular live music and special entertainment nights. We now have a TAB facility. It is situated in a very sunny location making it a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. In short, we have a lot to offer and would like to see more of our members getting full value for their subscriptions. And we are always looking for new members.
Just a little about myself. I have been a member of the Otaki RSA for almost twenty years. I served as Treasurer for nearly three years. I had a long career in the Reserve Bank of New Zealand where I held several executive positions which gave me a wide experience both in New Zealand and overseas. My first experience with voluntary work was with the Jaycees in Auckland and that continued with several other organisations, including Rotary.
I was a Compulsory Military Training (CMT) trainee, and was called up in 1952 to be part of the 7th intake. After basic training I was posted to the Royal New Zealand Armoured Corps (RNZAC) and then to B Sqn 1 Armoured Car Regiment (New Zealand Scottish).
See you in the clubrooms!
